The Merovingians
The Meros are the most consistently successful side in the club and field an unusual mix of veterans and young players.

Founded in 1970 by that famous duo of Tim Slater and Alan Clovis, The Merovingians have enjoyed three decades of success. The naming of the side has an interesting history - readers of these notes can send their suggestions as to its origin to our website. We would also like to hear from any old players with any of their memories of the team and its characters.
The meros has been an ideal place for older players to be 'put out to grass' in their dotage, whilst developing younger players who have gone on to first team football and then returned to their roots. Just look at John West. Other players to pass through the ranks have been current 1st XV Player Coach Guy Hope and younger players such as Steve Wilcock, Rob Parsons, Rich Stephenson, Paul Dunham and Tim Bolton.
Over the thirty year history of the Meros there has also been an international flavour to the team ranking from an American Grid Iron student Judd Miller to our current visitor Chris Coetzee from South Africa. Even our Welsh ex-club coach, Gary Pearce, has guested for the Meros on one occasion!
Stability has been the strength of the team and over the years there has only been 3 captains, from Alan Clovis, to Mike Stathers to the current encumberment, Ray "Dekker" Denton.
