Pocklington 22 - 12 Malton & Norton
The
Panthers got back to winning ways with a good win over old rivals Malton in a
scrappy but keenly contested game.
The Panthers made a great start as inside
the first five minutes lively stand off Mark Stringer dummied through under the
posts and added one of his trademark dropped conversions. And they were in the
driving seat when basketball handling from backs Martin Scott and Paul Ollett
paved the way for a comeback try for lock Stew Rowley.
But the Panthers then
had to show their defensive merit as Malton applied sustained pressure in the
second quarter, and the visitors closed to 12-5 at the interval with a try from
a chip over the top.
The Panthers regained the initiative in the second half
and after a strong forward drive the ball was shipped out wide for fullback Ollett
to score. And they pulled clear with their fourth try as replacement No 10 Jack
Bolam, another who impressed on his comeback, opened Malton up with a show and
go and the backline handled smartly to give wing Mike Kemp the space to fly to
the corner.
The Panthers handed Malton a late consolation with the last play
of the day. A promising home attack broke down on the Malton 22 and the visitors
countered to score under the posts to complete proceedings.
