Driffield 15 - 17 Pocklington
The Panthers
added to their impressive tally of wins with a victory away to local rivals, Driffield.
The Panthers were slow to get into their stride in the first quarter of an
hour, with Driffield applying a lot of pressure. The Panthers then woke up and
spent the next 20 minutes and keeping the ball alive and playing some exciting
rugby. Several brilliantly angled runs finally put skipper Phil Drew in under
the posts, with Harry Allen converting. Just before the break, a combination of
sloppy Panther's defence and elusive home running saw the visitor's lead cut to
just two points.
After the break, Driffield came back with added vigour and
soon used their obvious weight advantage to crash over from close range. With
Driffield 10 - 7 to the good, the Panthers upped their game and, after several
phases through the forwards, released the backs. Flying winger, Martin Scott,
had it all to do when he received the ball on the opposition ten metre line, but
he beat his opposite man then, through a mixture of power and pace, made it through
several defenders and threw himself over the try line with two home players still
attached.
The Panthers once more let poor tackling come to Driffield's aid
a mazy run through nearly the entire Panther's team ended with a score in the
corner. Again, the Panthers perked up and good phase play took them to the home
line. The Panthers picked up off the back of the ruck for Ben Rayner to power
over for a well deserved try. The remaining ten minutes saw play go from end to
end, but the Panthers kept the upper hand, with their lineout particularly productive
as they starved the home side of possession.
